Be smart about vacations

Maybe you’ve been looking forward to an upcoming vacation for months. But before you hit the beach, double-check that your home will be safe while you’re away. Take a few minutes to put a temporary stop on your mail and arrange for a trustworthy neighbor to handle your garbage cans on trash day. The last thing you want is to give would-be burglars any inclination that you’re gone for an extended period of time.

One other thing worth mentioning here is to avoid posting your vacation photos until you’re back home. You never know — a friend of a friend could get the wrong idea about an empty residence.

This is a big one. Whether you’ve lived in your current home for a year or a decade, it’s easy to get complacent when it comes to safety in your neighborhood. Take note of anyone or anything that may look suspicious and always err on the side of caution.
